Fantastic Four Staring Jessica Alba

The Fantastic Four
Review by David Stratton

Mr. Fantastic, who can elongate this body; Invisible Woman, who not only can become invisible at will but can render other objects invisible; Human Torch, who can shoot fire from his finger tips and bend flame; and The Thing, a hideously misshapen monster with superhuman strength, together battle the evil Doctor Doom.

FANTASTIC FOUR has been the jewel in the crown of Marvel comics, the longest running series of all, outdoing both X-MEN and SPIDERMAN. The Four in question are headed by Dr. Reed Richards, (Yo-an Gruffudd), a scientist with a dream of unlocking the secrets hidden inside a cosmic storm out in space.

Plagued by financial difficulties, Reed and his friend, Ben, (Michael Chiklis), seek help from billionaire industrialist Victor Von Doom, (Julian McMahon), Reed’s rival from university days. Reed’s ex-girlfriend, Sue Storm, (Jessica Alba), now works for Von Doom and apparently is his girlfriend.

Together with Sue’s arrogantly cocky brother, Johnny, (Chris Evans), they embark on the mission, but when Ben is trapped in the path of the storm, Reed, Johnny and Sue go to rescue him and are radiated.

Back on Earth, their radiation affects them in different ways; Ben is transformed into a supernaturally strong, rock-like creature known as ‘The Thing’; Johnny becomes a flying fireball known as ‘The Human Torch’; Sue is ‘The Invisible Woman’, capable of projecting powerful force fields; and Reed becomes rubber-like, able to shift his body into amazing shapes.

He’s Mr. Fantastic, and they’re The Fantastic Four. And Von Doom has changed, too, into the evil, iron-clad Dr. Doom.

I’m really getting over the apparently endless cycle of filmed comic books, and FANTASTIC FOUR, despite the usual, at times amazing, digital effects, is not markedly different from the others in the series, if anything, it’s less involving.

That’s because the characters aren’t very interesting; we’re supposed to feel sorry for Ben because, unlike the other three, he stays looking rock-like (actually, he looks as if he’s encased in rubber), and we’re supposed to find the supremely irritating Johnny amusing, when he’s anything but.

Yo-an Gruffudd and Jessica Alba are more attractive characters, but, as often in these films, it’s the villain who’s the most colourful, and Julian McMahon makes the most of the obnoxious Von Doom. I do think, though, that Hollywood should give the comics a rest.
