Reese Slams ‘Stupid’ Jess

Reese Witherspoon has launched a vicious verbal attack on Jessica Simpson, labelling the star a dumb blonde.The mother-of-two lashed out at Jess’s ditzy image, accusing the singer and actress of being a poor role model.
“Creating a cultural icon out of someone who goes, ‘I’m stupid, isn’t it cute?’ makes me want to throw daggers,” a furious Reese spat recently. “Saying that to young women, little girls, my daughter, is not okay.”
But the outspoken Vanity Fair star didn’t aim her vitriol at only Jess. She also hit out at such starlets as socialite Paris Hilton for reinforcing the “dumb blonde” stereotype.
“I want to say to them, ‘My grandma did not fight for what she fought for, and my mother did not fight for what she fought for, just so you can start telling women it’s fun to be stupid,” fumes Reese, 29.
Jessica’s airy persona has always been part of her image. While her mother Tina claims the blonde has an IQ of 160, she is more renowned for being ditzy. In one infamous episode of her reality TV show Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica, it seemed she didn’t know the difference between chicken and tuna.
It’s this type of behaviour that angers Reese. Says a pal, “For ... Jessica Simpson to parlay that dumb blonde routine into a career – well, that’s the kind of thing that gets Reese’s goat.
“She has said many times that women have to work hard enough to get the respect they deserve in Hollywood, without having to resort to being a walking punchline.”
But Jessica’s friends are shocked by the outburst, especially as the 25-year-old looks up to Reese. “I don’t want a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ movie career,” Jess says. “I want to be like Reese Witherspoon.”
While at the US premiere of The Dukes Of Hazzard recently, Jess was asked how she felt about the attack and was lost for words. “I didn’t know Reese called me a dumb blonde,” she said. ”I don’t know what to say about that. She’s Legally Blonde. I love Reese.”
However, Tina is quick to defend her daughter.
“Reese is a mother, just like me, so she should get to know Jessica before she makes up her mind about her and says things like that,” she argues.
“Just like she would expect someone to get to know her children before judging them.”
Insiders say the two Southern belles have a lot in common and could even be good friends. “I adore Reese,” Jess says. “I think she’s an amazing woman.”
This latest attack is yet another blow for Jess. It’s believed the starlet and her husband Nick Lachey, 31, are involved in divorce proceedings.
The New York Post recently claimed that the pair have signed divorce papers and the marriage is effectively over.
The reported split comes after continual talk of alleged discontent between the couple. Last month, Nick was said to be flirting with a mystery brunette, and Jess has also faced rumours she’s been cosy with actor Johnny Knoxville, 34.
Despite this, Jess’s career is hotter than ever – though she probably won’t be hearing from Reese’s production company, Type A Films, in the near future. “I don’t think Reese will be hiring Jessica for any of her films,” an insider says.
