Lindsay Lohan Escapes Injury

Lindsay Lohan In Crash
From correspondents in Los Angeles

Lindsay LohanTeenage Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan escaped injury when her Mercedes-Benz sports car was involved in a dramatic head-on collision with another vehicle in Los Angeles, eyewitnesses said.

The 19-year-old star of such films as this year's Herbie Fully Loaded and Freaky Friday collided with a van in the ritzy West Hollywood area in a crash that sent the other driver to hospital, an eyewitness told CBS2 television.

An apparently uninjured Lohan and her passenger leapt from the black Mercedes immediately after the crash and raced into a nearby antiques store, celebrity television reporter Victoria Recano told CBS2.

"I was just walking down the street when her Mercedes-Benz sped north ... and I guess ... hit a red van head-on," said Recano, who happened to witness the celebrity accident.

She said that Lohan and her passenger jumped out of the SL65 convertible coupe so fast that she left her handbag in the battered black sports car, the airbags of which had detonated on impact.

"I don't believe they were fleeing the scene, I think they were hiding from paparazzi who hang out in this area," Recano said.

However, she said that no paparazzi appeared to be in pursuit when the crash occurred.

"Lindsay and, I think it's her assistant, I believe are doing fine," Recano told CBS.

The witness said the pair had earlier been eating at a fashionable restaurant, The Ivy, where Lohan tried to avoid a barrage of about 20 paparazzi, but said she had shaken the press off before the crash.

Police confirmed there had been an accident but could not confirm who was involved. CBS said authorities confirmed the car belonged to Mean Girl star Lohan.

The accident occurred not far from where Lohan was involved in another crash while driving the same car in early June.

In that incident, police arrested a paparazzo photographer suspected of deliberately ploughing his van into Lohan's car in order to get a sensational photograph. Lohan suffered cuts and bruises.

The incident prompted California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pass a new law on Friday beefing up the penalties against paparazzi who commit assault while in pursuit of their subject.
