Guilty Leslie Set To Walk Free
From News correspondents in Denpasar
Australian model Michelle Leslie has been found guilty of using drugs by a Bali court but is now expected to be released from prison within hours. The judges sentenced her to three months in jail but with time already served during her trial, she should now be arriving back in Australia in a matter of days.
Leslie, who had arrived at the court today handcuffed and smiling, look composed as the verdict and sentence were handed down.
She sat quietly with her hands clasped on her lap as her interpreter translated the words of the presiding judge.
Prosecutors had asked three judges in the Denpasar District Court to convict her but only to impose a three-month prison term.
The 24-year-old Adelaide-born woman was arrested on August 20 outside a Bali dance party allegedly carrying two ecstasy pills.
Her defence team believed a three-month sentence is likely, although they still held out hopes for an acquittal.
Her Australian lawyer Ross Hill said his client should never have been arrested or charged.
Yesterday he said that once Leslie was released, it would take a few days to tie up some official loose ends so she could leave Indonesia.
Leslie was jostled by waiting media as she was led into the courthouse after being forced to walk through a large puddle of water outside the building.
