Krista Vendy At The Oscars
A Date Can't Hurt
By Sarah Grant
Former Neighbours starlet Krista Vendy traded Ramsay St for the world's most illustrious red carpet when she accompanied acclaimed actor William Hurt to the Academy Awards this week.As the world's media flashed their cameras, Vendy - gorgeously glamorous on the arm of Best Supporting Actor nominee Hurt - was almost unrecognisable as the Melbourne girl who shot to fame as Teresa Bell on the Aussie soap in 1999 before leaving in 2001.
Vendy's father David, who is the Mayor of Ballarat in Victoria, confirmed his daughter had been the History of Violence star's date for the Oscars.
"She didn't tell many people but she was obviously ecstatic about going," Mr Vendy said.
"The biggest thrill for her was meeting Lauren Bacall."Vendy donned a floor-length cream creation by Melbourne designer Shane McConnell to party with the some of Hollywood's biggest names, joining Hurt - and his close friend George Clooney - at Arnold Schwarzenegger's Governor's Ball and the exclusive Vanity Fair event.
Despite his daughter's apparent closeness with twice-divorced Oscar-winner Hurt on the red carpet, Mr Vendy was quick to rule out any romance.
He says the pair became friends during filming for Stephen King's telemovie series, Nightmares and Dreamscapes in Melbourne last year.
"They became reasonable friends and he rang her to ask if she would join him," he said. "She was going over to LA anyway for the [television] pilot season."
"It's just a friendship thing," he said.
"Getting into the big time [in Hollywood] is very difficult and she's keen to get her foot in the door. This may help, you never know."
Mr Vendy said his daughter was still with long-time partner Marcus Baldwin, with whom she co-owns T-shirt brand Suu Kyi.
The former Geelong footballer has remained in Australia while Vendy is in LA.
