Lily Thankful For Quick Rise

Not so long ago British singer Lily Allen was unemployed and spending her days watching television and smoking marijuana.

Less than a year later, the 21-year-old is a household name in the UK and well on her way to success in Australia.

"Before I was sitting at home smoking dope all day watching TV," said Allen, in Sydney to promote her debut album - Alright, Still.

"Now I don't have any time to do that. Life has definitely changed for the better ... I wasn't really happy before."

Allen's become known for her original cockney rhymes and catchy pop tunes and has been compared to fellow Brit outfit The Streets.

While she's signed to EMI music, the young English woman is also known for using the internet to showcase her music.

Prior to releasing Alright, Still, the singer had been uploading her tunes on community website MySpace.

Last month, her first single, Smile, was released and went straight to the top of the UK charts with the album peaking at number two.

The album debuted on the Australian charts in seventh spot this week.

"I have done pretty well out of it," she said.

Allen says she has a tendency to say what she thinks, without thinking about it.

She's been quoted as speaking out against Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Sir Bob Geldof, whom she once has called a "prat".

"I just don't like him," she said.

Allen famously told one British magazine she was going to celebrate her musical success by taking cocaine, or "gak", as she put it.

"Everything that comes out of my mouth isn't thought about, it gets me into loads of trouble and I think that is one of the things people quite like about me," she said.

"They can see that I have not got this master plan because nobody would be stupid enough to say any of those things."

Allen says she expects to return to Australia early next year, perhaps for the Big Day Out music festival.
