Hollywood star Angelina Jolie blamed the weight loss which has raised eyebrows among gossip columnists on the death of her mother in an interview published today."Someone saying to me that I'm thin is not a compliment," she told London's Evening Standard newspaper.
"I've always been lean and this year I lost my mom and I've gone through a lot. I have four kids and I finished breastfeeding - it's been hard to get my nutrition back on track.
"Instead of people saying I look like a person dealing with something emotionally, they assume it's because I want to fit into skinny jeans."
The star's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died of cancer in January.
Jolie, who with Brad Pitt makes up one of the world's most famous showbiz couples, stars as the wife of murdered United States reporter Daniel Pearl in A Mighty Heart, which is being released in the US on June 22.
She revealed in the interview that she had to ask A Mighty Heart director Michael Winterbottom for advice on a scene in which she is shown giving birth, because she had had a Caesarean section.
"It was very funny having a bunch of men explaining how to scream at the top of my lungs in a quiet floor of a real hospital in India," she said.
"We were all screaming back and forth at each other - it was bizarre."
Pearl, who worked for the Wall Street Journal, was beheaded in Pakistan by Islamic extremists in 2002 while researching outlawed groups.
